Who is the course aimed at

This course is for learners who are interested in nature, the environment and making a positive contribution to their local community.
Through hands-on projects and community-based activities, you will develop new skills, knowledge and confidence while exploring the natural world. You will learn about local wildlife, plants, habitats and environmental sustainability, as well as practical ways to support and improve green spaces within your community.

Entry requirements 

This course is for residents aged 19 and over living in Staffordshire, excluding Stoke-on-Trent. No prior knowledge or experience is required, but an interest in the countryside, animals, and nature is beneficial. Learners must be willing to attend all sessions, work towards learning goals, and complete a learner journal. Commitment to practical, nature-based activities in the community is essential. Learning support is available throughout the course to help you succeed.

What you will learn

Develop practical nature-based skills through activities such as seed collecting, autumn sowing, growing plants, planting, habitat improvement and wildlife monitoring. Learn about the environment, climate change and the importance of protecting local habitats. Build confidence, communication and problem-solving skills while working with others and helping to enhance community green spaces.

Learning materials

Please bring suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear for nature-based activities. Weather-appropriate clothing such as waterproofs or sun protection is recommended. If you use reading glasses, please bring them with you too. All other materials, equipment, and hot and cold drinks will be provided during the course.

Learning methods

Who will learn through practical, hands-on nature-based activities within your local community. Sessions include group activities, guided tasks and involvement in real environmental projects, including supporting a local sustainability project in nearby villages. You will have opportunities to share ideas, reflect on your learning and receive feedback in a friendly, supportive environment that encourages teamwork, confidence and personal development.

Learner support

Learning support is available throughout the course to help you succeed. This includes one-to-one guidance, additional resources, and adjustments to meet individual needs. Our tutors are approachable and committed to providing assistance with any challenges you may face, ensuring you feel safe and supported throughout.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed through practical activities, participation, completion of handouts, quizzes, and a learner journal. Regular reviews and discussions with your tutor will help track your progress. Assessments focus on demonstrating your skills and understanding of nature-based tasks and community involvement.

What can learners progress onto

There will be a selection of courses available for the new academic term in September. These courses support health and wellbeing, upskilling in maths and English, and include further community-based options or courses.
