Who is the course aimed at?
This Skills Bootcamp is for adults aged 19 or over who live in Stoke‑on‑Trent or Staffordshire, or who work for a business in these areas. It is for people who are looking for work, want a fresh start, or are ready to make a positive change. The course is welcoming and supportive, and is ideal for those returning to learning, building confidence, or taking steps towards new future employment in welding or further training in these skills.
Entry Requirements
You will not require previous knowledge in the subject. You must have a good level of English including reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will need a willingness to learn and the intention to move into employment.
What you will learn
Learners will be introduced to manual metal arc (MMA) welding techniques, including health and safety in a workshop environment, equipment set-up, electrode selection, joint preparation and basic weld positions. The programme covers practical welding practice, inspection of weld quality, fault identification and safe working procedures, with a focus on manufacturing related applications.
Learning Materials
All learning materials are provided
Learning Methods
Learning will be face to face at our Burslem campus. Welding classes will be held in the John Seddon Building in the evenings on either Tuesdays (MIG) or Thursdays (TIG) 5.30-8.30pm (for 10 weeks). Employability classes will be face to face at Burslem during the day.
Learning Support
We want everyone to feel supported and able to do their best on this course. If you need extra help with learning, reading, writing, maths, technology, or for a disability, health need, or personal reason, support is available. You can tell us at the start or at any time, and we will work with you to put the right support in place.
How you will be assessed
At the start of the bootcamp, we take time to get to know you. We talk about what you can already do and what you want to learn. Together we set clear goals and check progress as you go. Learning is checked through ongoing discussion, practical work and review of progress. Your learning is shown through practical work and regular reviews. Skills for work, like teamwork and communication, are recorded in a simple learner workbook.
What can learners progress onto
After completing the Welding Skills Bootcamp, learners can progress onto further welding courses at the college. This includes Level 2 or Level 3 Welding courses starting in September. Learners can build on their skills, gain recognised qualifications, and move closer to skilled employment or an apprenticeship in the welding and construction industry. You will be guaranteed an interview after this bootcamp.
