Who is the course aimed at?
The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who do not speak English and would like to improve their English skills.
Entry Requirements
Learners should have little or no previous knowledge of English. They will need to complete an initial assessment to confirm that Entry 1 is the appropriate level for them.
What you will learn
On an Entry 1 ESOL course, you will develop basic English skills to help you communicate in everyday situations.
You will learn how to:
- Introduce yourself and give basic personal information.
- Understand and use simple everyday words and phrases.
- Take part in short conversations and ask and answer simple questions.
- Listen for key information in familiar situations.
- Read and understand simple words, signs, forms and short texts.
- Write simple sentences and complete basic forms.
- Talk about yourself, your family, home, work and daily activities.
- Use English for practical situations such as shopping, travelling and making appointments.
- Develop your pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary.
- Build confidence in speaking and communicating with others.
- You will practise all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, through classroom activities and everyday situations.
Learning Materials
We will provide the workbooks. You will need to bring a pen and paper to take notes and to be able to complete the workbooks during the course.
Learning Methods
An Entry 1 ESOL student will learn through teacher demonstrations, repetition, guided practice, group activities, pair work, role-play, pictures, audio and real-life situations. They will practise speaking, listening, reading and writing regularly, with support and feedback from the teacher to build confidence and improve their English.
Learner Support
Classes are small to ensure your teacher can provide you with the help and support you need to enable you to confidently access the class learning materials. Individual specific needs will be discuss at the start of the course.
How you will be assessed
To ensure you are on track and your understanding of the course, your teacher will use verbal questions, observations and an individual learning plan to monitor your progress against the course outcomes.
