Who is the course aimed at

This course is for learners who would like to improve their wellbeing while learning practical DIY and creative crafting skills. Through a variety of hands-on projects, you will develop new skills, build confidence and discover how creative activities can support positive mental wellbeing. You will explore a range of practical DIY and craft techniques, which may include woodworking, willow weaving, wreath making, pressed flower art, seasonal crafts, upcycling projects and simple home improvement tasks.


Whether you are looking to learn a new hobby, develop practical life skills, increase your confidence or meet new people, this course offers an enjoyable opportunity to learn, create and support your wellbeing through hands-on activities.

Entry requirements

This course is for residents aged 19 and over living in Staffordshire, excluding Stoke-on-Trent. No experience needed - just a keen interest in crafting or DIY. You will need to attend all sessions, be open to learning new skills, and keep a simple learner journal to help track your progress and support your goals along the way.

What you will learn

Develop practical skills, confidence and creativity through a range of hands-on DIY, craft and food activities. Learn beginner woodworking techniques by creating tile trivets and wooden planters, explore natural crafts including wreath making, willow weaving and pressed flower art, and develop food skills through artisan bread making and more. Enjoy learning new skills while creating handmade items to take home.

Learning materials

Please bring appropriate clothing for the activities you will be taking part in, for example outdoor clothing, as some crafting sessions will involve outdoor activities such as willow weaving  Do not forget suitable footwear - e.g., boots or wellingtons. A packed lunch may be required for some sessions, but for most sessions lunch is provided.  All materials needed for the course will be supplied but we always welcome donations of any crafting materials if you have spare or surplus. 

Learning methods

Learn face to face in a classroom or outdoor setting using hands-on activities, demos, videos, handouts, group chats, quizzes and by creating your own learning folder - designed to suit different learning styles and build confidence step-by-step.

Learner support

Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet individual needs, whether this is support with completing your learner journal, access to an iPad, or individual support to help build confidence and guide you through activities.

How you will be assessed

Learners will be reviewed at the start, throughout, and at the end of the course. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment of their course or pursue additional areas of interest.

What can learners progress onto

A range of follow-on courses will be available in the new year (Term 2), offering opportunities to continue developing skills, confidence and wellbeing. Options will include further health and wellbeing courses, maths and English skills development, community-based learning opportunities and courses that bring the community together in a supportive environment. Learners can also progress onto more challenging design and creative crafting courses to further develop their skills.
