Who is the course aimed at:
The course is ideal for anyone who enjoys storytelling, wants to improve their writing skills, express themselves creatively, or use journalling as a tool for personal reflection and wellbeing. You may have always wanted to write but never known where to start, or you may already enjoy writing and be looking for fresh ideas, inspiration and encouragement to take your work further.
Entry Requirements
This course is for residents aged 19 and over living in Staffordshire, excluding Stoke-on-Trent. It is open to all abilities, whether you are new to writing, returning to a previous interest, or looking to develop your skills further. No previous experience is needed, only an interest in creative writing, fiction and journalling.
Course Content
Develop your creative writing skills by exploring fiction, storytelling and journalling techniques. Learn how to use the English language to express ideas, thoughts and emotions with confidence. Create characters, settings and short stories, while discovering different journalling styles such as reflective, gratitude, travel and creative journals. Build your own writing voice through enjoyable practical activities and guided exercises.
Learning Methods
Learning takes place through tutor-led sessions, practical writing activities, group discussion and individual tasks in a friendly, supportive environment. You will explore ideas through creative exercises, receive guidance and feedback, and have the opportunity to share your work if you wish. Where possible, visits to local places of interest will inspire creativity, observation and new ideas for your writing.
Learning Materials
Learning takes place through tutor-led activities, practical writing exercises, discussion and individual tasks in a friendly setting. Where possible, visits to local places of interest provide inspiration for creative writing, fiction and journaling, encouraging observation and new ideas. All materials are provided, including notebooks, calligraphy pens and creative writing resources. You are welcome to bring your own notebook if you wish.
Learner Support
Learners will receive ongoing support and encouragement throughout the course in a friendly and inclusive environment. Your tutor will provide guidance, feedback and advice to help you develop your creative writing, fiction and journalling skills. Additional volunteer classroom support is also available for learners who may need a little extra help, ensuring everyone can take part, build confidence and work towards their learning goals.
Course Assessments
Informal assessments will take place through ongoing observation, participation in activities and completion of practical writing tasks to support your progression. You will receive regular feedback through your Individual Learning Plan to support your progress and learning goals. Weekly self-reflection journals will help you review your development and achievements. In class, you will receive ongoing verbal encouragement and recognition as you explore new vocabulary, creative language choices, writing styles and storytelling techniques. There are no formal exams; the focus is on building confidence and developing your skills.
What can learners do next/progress onto?
Learners can progress onto further courses with Upper Moreton Rural Activities (UMRA). Alternatively, they may wish to pursue further writing courses at Further Education (FE) colleges.
