Who is the course aimed at
This course is for learners who would like to improve their maths skills in a practical, supportive and enjoyable way. Using cooking and food preparation as the main focus, you will develop everyday maths skills that can be applied at home, in further learning and in the workplace.
The course is designed to build confidence in using maths in real-life situations, helping to remove anxiety and show how maths can be useful, practical and relevant. As you prepare a variety of simple dishes, you will develop problem-solving skills, improve your understanding of numbers and gain confidence in making calculations independently.
Entry requirements
This course is for residents aged 19 and over living in Staffordshire, excluding Stoke-on-Trent. No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in improving your maths skills would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.
What you will learn
Learn new key maths concepts through cooking and everyday maths challenges. This practical course offers opportunities to create healthy tasty dishes and it will enable you to budget as you go along. Through hands-on activities, you will explore measuring, weighing, counting, calculating quantities, understanding fractions, working with ratios and following recipes. You will also learn how to plan meals, compare prices, budget for ingredients and calculate costs to help make the most of your money.
Learning materials
All ingredients will be supplied for this cookery course. Please come in clothing that allows you to roll up your sleeves past the elbow. We request that long hair is tied back and beards are covered with a mask or beard net. If you need glasses for reading or any learning aids please bring these along too. Please bring a packed lunch for the first day.
Learning methods
Face to face learning in a classroom and kitchen, exploring different recipes and cooking activities, together with an opportunity for shopping on a budget. The course offers a variety of user-friendly learning styles, taking away any maths worries or concerns.
Learner support
Learning support is available throughout the course to meet learners’ individual needs. Our aim is to ensure every learner feels supported, and able to complete tasks successfully while developing new skills at their own pace.
How you will be assessed
At the start of the course, learners will be supported to identify their starting point and working level. Throughout the course, learners will review their progress with their tutor, celebrating successes and exploring ways to develop skills further. Each week, learners will have the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned and identify any areas where they may need additional guidance to make the most of their learning.
What can learners progress onto
Learners can continue on to further courses in the spring term, with opportunities to support wellbeing, community involvement, and further upskilling in Maths and English.
