Building Skills for Work, Growth and Progression (ESOL)

This course helps English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learners develop practical skills, confidence and knowledge for the workplace, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, employability skills and understanding workplace expectations.

Who is the course aimed at? 

The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+  who would like to develop the skills, knowledge, confidence and employability skills needed to prepare for, enter and succeed in the workplace for Learners with English as a second language.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required. The course is suitable for learners who want to develop their employability skills, confidence and understanding of the workplace. A short initial assessment may be used to identify individual learning needs.

What you will learn

The Building Skills for Work course supports learners in developing the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to prepare for employment and succeed in the workplace.

Learners will cover:

  • Understanding workplace expectations, behaviour and responsibilities.
  • Developing effective communication skills for the workplace.
  • Building confidence when speaking with colleagues, customers and employers.Working effectively as part of a team.
  • Developing problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding time management, organisation and reliability.
  • Identifying personal strengths, skills and areas for development.
  • Developing a positive attitude towards work and learning.
  • Understanding health, safety and appropriate workplace practices.
  • Exploring different job roles, sectors and employment opportunities.
  • Developing CVs, application forms and job-search skills.
  • Preparing for job interviews and practising interview techniques.
  • Understanding the importance of equality, diversity and respectful behaviour at work.
  • Developing digital and practical skills that support employment.

Learners will take part in practical activities, discussions, group work, role-play and workplace-related tasks to build confidence and apply their skills to real-life situations.

Learning materials

We will provide the workbooks. You will need to bring a pen and paper to take notes and to be able to complete the workbooks during the course.

Learning methods

Learners will learn through practical activities, discussions, group and pair work, role-play, presentations and real-life workplace tasks. They will develop their skills through guided practice, feedback and reflection, helping them build confidence and become more prepared for employment.

Learner support

Classes are small to ensure your teacher can provide you with the help and support you need to enable you to confidently access the class learning materials. Individual specific needs will be discussed at the start of the course. 

How you will be assessed

To ensure you are on track and your understanding of the course, your teacher will use verbal questions, observations and an individual learning plan to monitor your progress against the course outcomes.
