Wodehouse Bridge, A463 Wodehouse Lane, Wombourne

Staffordshire County Council together with Amey will be carrying out bridge refurbishment works (phase 2) at Wodehouse Bridge, A463 Wodehouse Lane, Wombourne.

The bridge is a grade II listed, masonry arch structure constructed in the 18th century and refurbishment works are proposed to maintain its structural performance and integrity. This phase of works will include:

  • Installation of new tie bars and pattress plates to the spandrels and wingwalls.
  • Waterproofing of the reinforced concrete saddle on the arch extrados.
  • Drainage improvements and resurfacing.

When are the works taking place?

The scheme will commence on 1st June 2026.

What is the duration of the works?

7 weeks.

How will the works be carried out?

A full road closure will be implemented for the duration of the works with no through route over the bridge. The A463 Wodehouse Lane shall be closed from the junction with the A449 Stourbridge Road (Battlefield Roundabout) to approximately 550m to the east, at the junction with access roads to Wodehouse cottages. Access to frontages shall be maintained.

During the works a diversion route shall be in place as follows:

When approaching from the west to A463 Wodehouse Lane

  • Continue north at Battlefield Roundabout along A449 Stourbridge Road for approximately 1.6 km
  • At the roundabout, take the third exit onto A449 Penn Road, continue for approximately 2.6 km
  • At the junction, turn right onto A4039 Goldthorn Hill, continue for approximately 1.4 km
  • At the junction, turn right onto A459 Wolverhampton Road East continue for approximately 3.0 km
  • At the roundabout, take the third exit onto Gospel End Street, continue for approximately 0.4 km
  • Continue onto A463 Gospel End Road for approximately 1.4km
  • At Gospel End the A463 Gospel End becomes A463 Wodehouse Lane

When approaching from the east the above diversion route applies in reverse.

What effect could the works have on me?

We take care to make sure that work is completed with the minimum of disturbance to the local community but as with any road closure, some delays may occur.

How you can help us

  • Please keep children away from the works to ensure their safety.
  • Always adhere to the road closures and follow the diversion routes.
  • Please drive slowly and with caution through the works when gaining access to frontages.
  • Check your shoes before entering your property or car to make sure there is no bitumen from the works.
