Grit bins
About Grit Bins
In addition to Staffordshire’s extensive winter service operations, grit/salt bins are placed at key locations on the road network where additional treatment may be required. These sites are risk assessed based on factors such as:
- Proximity to high-speed roads
- Traffic volumes
- Gradients and bends
Note: Grit bins are for use on public highways only, not for private driveways.
How many grit bins are there?
There are nearly 3,000 grit bins and salt piles across Staffordshire, helping communities treat roads where skidding vehicles could pose a safety risk during severe weather.
How does salt work?
Salt lowers the freezing point of water when driven or walked over, forming a solution that helps melt ice. Roads with higher traffic volumes clear faster due to this process.
When are grit bins refilled?
- All bins are fully stocked at the start of winter.
- Most bins are replenished routinely throughout the season, depending on weather and resources.
- Bins at lower-risk sites may only be filled once at the start of the season.
Salt should be used sparingly and only during prolonged adverse weather. A small amount goes a long way, especially on well-trafficked roads.
