Frequently asked questions - Flooding and drainage
Drainage
How do I report a blocked drain?
The easiest way to report a blocked drain is online.
What Happens After You Report an Issue?
- When you report a problem, you’ll get a unique reference number. If you give us your email address, you’ll receive automatic updates.
We aim to inspect the issue within 10 working days. During extreme weather (storms, heavy rain, snow), inspections may take longer but will be done as soon as possible.
After the inspection, we’ll email you the outcome. You don’t need to follow up once you have your reference number and confirmation.
How Long Will It Take to Clean the Drain?
In urban areas, gullies work together as a network to drain the road. Even if some gullies are blocked, the network usually works well unless standing water occurs regularly and poses a risk.
Most blocked gullies are emptied as part of the routine cleansing programme. Urgent cases are prioritised.
The Drain I Reported Is Worse – What Should I Do?
If the situation has worsened, please submit a new report via the Report It section. When you enter the location, your previous report will appear.
You can:
- Select it
- Add more details
- Upload photos
- Submit updates
This helps the inspector review the changes.
Water Splashing My Property
If standing water causes waves that splash onto your property for more than 2 hours after rainfall, please report it so we can inspect nearby gullies.
Why Didn’t the Crew Clean Every Drain?
Crews may leave some drains because:
- They don’t need cleaning
- The crew was called to urgent work elsewhere
They will return to complete outstanding work. You don’t need to report it again.
Can I Speak to the Inspector?
We usually provide updates electronically because of the number of reports we receive. If we think a conversation would help assess the issue, we’ll try to contact you.
Flooding
How do I report flooding?
You can report flooding online. We may close roads, set up diversions, and provide sandbags. District councils may also help residents and provide support during flooding events.
Highway Water Entering Your Property
If water from the highway is entering your home (not garages or outbuildings), please report it online.
Requesting Sandbags
We don’t have a duty to provide sandbags. However, we may supply them to protect:
- Life
- Critical infrastructure
- Buildings
Sandbags are coordinated by emergency services and are not issued directly to the public. If you’re concerned about flooding, please report it online.
