Woodworking couple carve out new business at Silverdale Enterprise Centre

A husband-and-wife team are turning their passion for woodworking into a new business after finding the perfect base at Staffordshire County Council's Silverdale Enterprise Centre.

Jo and Simon Curl have launched Shabby Chic Shop, creating bespoke handmade gifts and homeware from recycled furniture.

The couple moved into a workshop unit at Silverdale Enterprise Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme last November and say that, thanks to the affordable workspace and support they've received, they are now ready to get their business off the ground.

Jo Curl, Co-Founder of Shabby Chic Shop, said:

“Not only is it cost-effective, it’s a really good space to work in, and there’s so much information for start-up businesses that you would never think of. You’ve got all this peace and quiet around you as well and always a smiley face.

“I would recommend anyone come to Silverdale. In fact, I’m highly surprised they’re not beating people off with a stick because it is a fabulous place.”

Simon has always had a passion for carpentry. He completed an apprenticeship in cabinet making and established a successful woodworking business when he lived in Australia for 17 years. Both Jo and Simon would love to return there one day.

Before their move to Silverdale, they looked around at six enterprise centres, which they found too expensive. Another business owner recommended Silverdale to them and they were guided through the process by the centre’s friendly team.

The next steps for Jo and Simon are to build a website and start sharing their wares with the world. Their ambition is to have a piece of their furniture and giftware in every house.

Silverdale Enterprise Centre is one of eight enterprise Centres run by Staffordshire County Council to provide flexible and affordable workspace for start-up and growing businesses.

Robin Hall, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, said:

"It's fantastic to support local businesses like the Shabby Chic Shop as they take the next step in their journey. Jo and Simon are a great example of the ambition and entrepreneurship we want to encourage across Staffordshire, and I wish them every success in their new premises.

"Helping businesses start, grow, and create jobs is a key priority for us. That's why our enterprise centres offer flexible, affordable workspace without long-term contracts. Businesses simply pay a rolling monthly fee, giving them the freedom to expand or scale back as their needs change.

"If you're thinking of starting a business, or you're ready to grow, take a look at the units we have available across Staffordshire. We want to make it as easy as possible for businesses to succeed."
