Summer Reading Challenge returns to Staffordshire with musical theme

Young readers across Staffordshire are being invited to turn up the volume on reading this summer as libraries launch this year’s musically themed ‘Read to the Beat’ Summer Reading Challenge.

Run by Staffordshire County Council’s Libraries service, the free initiative encourages children to stay engaged with books during the school holidays. This year’s challenge takes inspiration from music with its ‘Read to the Beat’ theme, highlighting how stories and sound can spark imagination, boost confidence and bring people together.

As a highlight of the National Year of Reading, the challenge, now under way, runs until Monday 14 September. Children are encouraged to borrow and read books and complete challenges over the summer, choosing anything from novels and non-fiction to audiobooks and eBooks. Every title counts, as long as it is borrowed through the library service.

Hayley Coles, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“The Summer Reading Challenge continues to play an important role in supporting children’s learning outside the classroom over the summer holiday.

“This year’s ‘Read to the Beat’ theme offers a fun and imaginative way to connect books with music, helping children stay motivated to read regularly.  By taking part, they can discover new interests and keep their reading skills strong ahead of the new school year.

“Our libraries are community hubs and welcoming spaces, providing free access to resources, and engaging activities that families can enjoy together. I’d definitely encourage families to visit their local library and sign up for the challenge.”

A packed programme of activities will also take place in libraries across the county. These include creative workshops, storytelling sessions and hands-on events inspired by music, rhythm and performance.

This year’s ‘Read to the Beat’ Summer Reading Challenge is delivered by the Reading Agency and children can register for free at any Staffordshire library. While designed for children aged 4 to 11, the challenge is open to all ages, encouraging a shared love of reading at home.
