Students at Walton Hall Academy are settling into their new learning hub in Stafford town centre, following a £1 million investment by Staffordshire County Council.
The new facility, located in Staffordshire Place 2 on Tipping Street, has been created specifically for students aged 16 to 19. The dedicated learning space provides a modern environment where they can continue their education while developing independence and essential life skills.
It includes six modern classrooms equipped with new furniture and IT equipment, a reception area, kitchen and dining facilities, intervention rooms, toilets and a nurse's room.
The town centre location gives students greater opportunities to take part in community-based learning and build confidence in everyday situations. They will be able to practise using public transport, visit local shops and community facilities, and develop the practical skills needed for adult life.
Janet Higgins, Cabinet Member for Education and SEND at Staffordshire County Council, said:
"I'm thrilled to see the students settling in and enjoying their new learning hub and making the most of the opportunities it provides.
“The facility will help these young people develop confidence, independence and important life skills in a supportive environment, while giving them greater access to the community as they prepare for adult life.
“This project is part of our wider investment in education places for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). In addition to this, we are also building a new special school, completing expansions at other special schools, and developing resource bases at mainstream schools to provide supported places for children with SEND.”
Julie Wood, Academy Principal, said:
"Flourish is much more than a building; it provides a real opportunity for young people with special educational needs.
“At Walton Hall, we believe that every student deserves access to experiences that prepare them for a happy, fulfilled and successful adult life. By creating a mature college environment in the heart of Stafford, we are providing our students with meaningful opportunities to develop independence, confidence and employability skills while continuing to receive the specialist support they need.
“We are incredibly grateful to Staffordshire County Council and everyone who has been involved in turning our vision into reality. It has certainly exceeded our expectations, and the positive impact it has already had on the students is evident.”
