Staffordshire County Council’s Trading Standards team are backing a new campaign warning people about the risks of rogue roofers.
The campaign by the vetting service for tradespeople, Checkatrade, hopes to remind homeowners about the risks of fraudulent roofers and how to protect themselves from scams.
Rogue traders often target the public following storms or strong winds, leading to a high demand for home repairs. They typically target elderly residents, homeowners with older properties, or people living in areas known for high property values.
Officers want people to be wary of unsolicited calls to their homes, not to sign up on the doorstep for services and not to be pressured into accepting offers of work. Warning signs include requests for large upfront payments, the absence of written quotes and a lack of a physical business address.
Anthony Screen, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Resilience at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“Rogue traders are a blight on our communities and we must do all we can to stamp them out.
"These scammers are simply criminals who try and swindle people out of their money while causing them real distress. There are some simple steps to take and things to remember to protect yourself but if people feel threatened, they should contact the Police or Trading Standards.
“This work is linked to our first ever Community Safety Strategy that aims to protect residents, particularly the most vulnerable, and create a county where everyone feels safe and supported.”
Trading Standards officers have offered the following advice:
- Be wary of periods of high demand: Unvetted traders often take advantage of busy periods. Read verified reviews and ensure traders are vetted and qualified.
- Be wary of cheap quotes: If the cost seems too good to be true, it probably is. Use guides on reputable websites to check on quoted prices.
- Be wary of demands for full payment upfront: Do not agree to this demand. Get a detailed written quote that includes T&Cs and states what will be covered by the quote before work starts.
- Never accept work from cold callers or door-steppers: Reputable traders will never do this. Do not be pressured by someone who knocks on your door.
