Staffordshire County Council’s highways lead is asking HS2 Ltd to do more to support people affected by the extended closure of the A38 Streethay slip road.
The road was expected to reopen in October 2026, but will now remain closed until April 2027.
Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways Peter Mason has written to HS2 Ltd, calling on them to provide a fair package of funding and practical support for affected communities and the local road network.
The council says the longer closure will mean more delays for drivers, extra pressure on local roads and more disruption for nearby communities and businesses.
It will also affect planned road maintenance, with some work likely to be delayed. This could add costs and increase the risk of roads getting worse.
County Councillor Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“Residents, businesses and road users have already faced a lot of disruption, so this further delay is very disappointing.
“We understand safety must come first, but the extended closure will keep putting pressure on local roads and journeys in and around Lichfield.
“HS2 Ltd needs to recognise this impact and provide proper support for the people, businesses and roads affected. This is why I have asked them for an appropriate package of mitigation measures and financial support for the affected communities and highway network.”
What the council is asking for:
The council is asking HS2 Ltd to help cover extra costs linked to the closure, including:
• £45,600 for extra patching work on the A5127 Trent Valley Road and Burton Road;
• £60,000 for repairs on Watery Lane;
• support towards major maintenance at the Sainte Foy Avenue and Limburg Avenue roundabout, estimated at £759,000;
• support towards wider road maintenance in Lichfield, estimated at £435,000; and
• more community funding and environmental improvements for the areas most affected.
