Perton Library is hosting one of the village’s most exciting community events of the year as its Science Fair & Spring Festival returns.
Taking place on Saturday 9 May from 10am to 3pm, the fair brings together science, nature, technology, creativity and reading for a free and fun‑packed day for all ages.
Activities include ZooLab’s live animal encounters, comic art workshops with Beano cartoonist Marc Jackson, and LEGO robotics and coding workshops with STEMBOTICS.
Visitors will also get the chance to explore outer space by handling real meteorites and delving into astronomy with Wolverhampton Astronomical Society. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about animals and nature with Cuan Wildlife Rescue and Wild About Perton, explore virtual reality with Veolia, live pet sketches with author and illustrator Mark Bardsley, and a deep dive into glacial boulders, millennia old, with the Black Country Geological Society.
Catherine Mann, Assistant Director for Culture, Rural and Safer Communities at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“Events like the Perton Library Science Fair are always incredibly popular and show how libraries can spark curiosity, encourage a lifelong love of reading and give families the chance to learn together.
“During the National Year of Reading, it’s wonderful to see our libraries working so closely with partners and local groups to put on such a great event. Libraries are so much more than places to borrow books, they are community hubs and welcoming spaces where people learn and grow together. I’d definitely encourage people to get the date in their diary for a great family day out.”
Teams from Staffordshire County Council will also be at the event, with its environmental team hosting activities for families and the Digital Infrastructure Team demonstrating VR headsets at their stall. The council’s Archives and Heritage team will also be hosting a Cyanotypes workshop and the FAIR Flood Risk Team are providing activities to teach visitors more about flood risks.
Also on display at the fair will be a real Dallara F3 racing car, while many more activities are waiting for families courtesy of Moog, Lapworth Museum of Geology, Staffordshire Wildlife, South Staffordshire District Council and more.
Finally, as icing on the cake, Perton Voices will be performing music for all visitors.
The event is being delivered as part of Green Libraries Month and the National Year of Reading, with Perton Library once again joining forces with Wild About Perton and a wide range of community partners.
Activities are either free or low cost, though some events need to be booked.
Families are encouraged to book early for workshops by contacting Perton Library on 01902 506050 or by emailing perton.library@staffordshire.gov.uk.
