Safety repairs on Barnhurst Lane completed and road reopened

Highways crews at Staffordshire County Council have completed a series of safety repairs on Barnhurst Lane near Codsall.

The lane has now been reopened following the ten-day scheme, which began on 14 April.

Crews have spent the time carrying out complex repairs, as well as clearing gulleys and drains, and reinstating white lining.

Most of the repairs have been made by an innovative repair method called screeding – a quick and efficient way to repair multiple defects.

Defects are filled with a hot mastic asphalt for structural strength. After that, a thin layer of mastic (a kind of sealant for the road surface) is applied over the defect to seal it and create a high skid resistance.

Peter Mason, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“It’s great to have these safety repairs completed and the road reopened again.

“We have made repairs using a new product that contains, amongst other things, recycled tyres. This is not only more sustainable but also reduces waste and is quicker to complete repairs compared with more traditional methods. An example of the innovation we are implementing as part of our roadmap.

“I’d like to thank people for their patience and co-operation while the road was closed and the works carried out.”
