Preparation and investigative work ahead of a major road maintenance scheme in Stone town centre takes place from next week.

The works, including drainage, CCTV and road surface investigations, will help with design and preparation for the main structural maintenance scheme this summer.

This will take place on the town centre ring road and include Stafford Street, Crown Street, Newcastle Street, Christchurch Way and Radford Street, and take a fortnight to complete.

Starting on Monday 9 February, this phase of works will involve overnight closures until Friday 13 February. During the second week which is the schools’ half-term, there will be lane closures and temporary traffic signals in operation during the daytime only.

The main scheme is scheduled to take place from mid-June until August, with full details confirmed closer to the time.

Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet support member for highways, said:

A major road maintenance scheme is planned for the Stone ring road this summer which will bring huge improvements for motorists around a busy and thriving town.

To ensure the design and preparation is thorough, these investigative works over the next fortnight are essential. Not only will they ensure we have a high-quality scheme, but also that it can be carried out as quickly as possible.

This phase has been planned to coincide with the half-term break to minimise disruption, with the bulk of the main scheme taking place during the summer holidays. We understand that with any traffic management however, particularly on such a busy route, there will inevitably be some disruption for which we would like to apologise for in advance. We’re always grateful for people’s understanding wherever we’re carrying out improvements.”
