A new zebra crossing and improvements have been completed in Leek town centre to help make walking and wheeling easier and safer.
The scheme, on St Edward Street, has seen the installation of a new zebra crossing alongside a widened footway on the eastern side of the road, new dropped kerbs and tactile paving. New belisha beacon poles with integrated lighting have also been installed, together with resurfacing on the approaches to the crossing and refreshed road markings.
An additional uncontrolled crossing point has also been created on High Street, near its junction with St Edward Street, further improving accessibility and pedestrian safety.
Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said:
"We're delighted to see these improvements completed and open for people using Leek town centre.
“The new crossing and improved accessibility will make it easier and safer for pedestrians to move around the area, particularly for people with disabilities, wheelchair users and families with young children.
"These improvements are part of our wider commitment to creating safer, more accessible communities and encouraging more people to choose active travel for shorter journeys. I'd like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while the work was carried out."
The improvements form part of Active Travel England’s programme to enhance local infrastructure and support more sustainable travel choices.
