Motorists are being advised to plan their journeys, as high temperatures continue across Staffordshire.
An Amber weather alert for ‘extreme heat’ is currently in place across the whole of Staffordshire, and temperatures are expected to reach 35C in some areas of the county by Thursday.
The Met Office has raised the alert to Red for ‘extreme heat’ covering other parts of the West Midlands, meaning a risk to life, power systems and transport.
Those making journeys are being advised to carry plenty of water, plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel.
Residents are also being advised to carry essential summer supplies in their vehicles, such as sun block, sunglasses, hat and any emergency medication that might be needed.
Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Support Member for Highways North said:
“In hot weather, we would advise people only make necessary journeys. However, we know that some people will not be able to avoid this, so we’re advising that they ensure they are well prepared for the heat. That means taking plenty of drinking water and items to protect them from the sun in case they experience difficulties on their journeys.”
Staffordshire County Council has also said that four modified gritters are on standby across the county to helps stabilise any road surface affected by the heat.
The vehicles are ready to spread granite dust, which helps absorb any soft bitumen and makes the road surface less sticky. Weather conditions are also being monitored to determine the impact on the county’s roads.
Pat continued:
“The high temperatures forecast over the next few days will likely affect our network. To this end, we have four dusting vehicles stationed across the county, ready to spread granite dust on any road that needs it. The granite is different to the grit we spread in winter, in that it is designed to absorb soft bitumen and stabilise the road surface.
“Much like we monitor weather and road conditions in the winter, we are now monitoring the current weather conditions and the impact on our roads. We are ready to send out the vehicles as and when is necessary, but would ask that people follow the advice to plan their journeys and be prepared for hot conditions.”
