Major highways scheme in Staffordshire Moorlands moves to next phase

A crossroads, Cellarhead

A major highways improvement scheme at the Cellarhead junction in the Staffordshire Moorlands moves to the next phase.

From Monday 27 April, crews will be working on the A520 Leek Road from the Cellarhead junction southbound. Work will include repairs to drainage systems along with replacing damaged ironwork and kerbs.  Once the necessary repairs are completed, the road will be resurfaced.

To make sure the work can be done safely, the road will be closed for four weeks until Monday 25 May and no through traffic will be allowed.  A signed diversion will be in place and residents will have access where possible.  Crews advise that delays are likely and people should allow extra time for their journeys.

Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“This is a vital scheme for the Staffordshire Moorlands and part of wider improvements taking place across the county.

“The Cellarhead junction and A520 Leek Road is a busy route and these improvements will make a huge difference for residents and those who travel through the area.

“Since starting, crews have already completed various kerbing works, installed new drainage channels and cleared off several footways. Following this, they will then move on to drainage and ironwork repairs which require road closures to complete safely.

“Crews continue to do everything in their power to get the work done as quickly and safely as possible and we’re grateful for people’s co-operation.”

The £2.6 million scheme is planned to take around six months to complete with further temporary road closures scheduled. On Tuesday 26 May, the A52 Kingsley Road will be closed until Sunday 21 June. From Monday 22 June, the A520 Leek Road, from Cellarhead junction northbound, will be closed until Friday 14 August.  Diversions will be in place during both closures.
