Highway crews have completed a scheme making it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle near The Friary School in Lichfield.
The improvements were made along Eastern Avenue to provide better access for pedestrians and cyclists, including a new shared-use cycleway and footway along the north side of Eastern Avenue near the school.
The existing puffin crossing next to the school entrance has been upgraded to a toucan crossing, allowing both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely. An existing footpath linking Eastern Avenue and Grange Lane has also been improved for use as a shared footway and cycleway.
Daniel Cecil, Cabinet Support Member for Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said: “These improvements are a great example of how we are making it easier and safer for people to choose walking and cycling for everyday journeys.
“By creating better links around The Friary School, we are helping pupils, families and residents travel more actively and confidently. Schemes like this not only improve safety and accessibility but also support healthier lifestyles and reduce reliance on car travel.
“I’m pleased to see this project completed and delivering benefits for the local community."
The £400,000 project was funded by HS2 as part of wider investment to encourage active travel and improve connectivity in communities along the route of the railway.
