A major highways improvement scheme in Kidsgrove is set to get under way next week, as part of a wider programme to support regeneration and improve accessibility in the town centre.
The scheme is being delivered by Staffordshire County Council in partnership with Newcastle Borough Council as part of the Government’s Town Deal programme. Work is expected to begin on Monday 13 July and take around nine weeks to complete.
The £700,000 project will see the creation of two new one-way road systems in the town centre to improve traffic flow and pedestrian facilities and create a more attractive and accessible town centre.
At Station Road and Meadows Road, improvements will include the introduction of a new one-way traffic system between the A50 Liverpool Road and The Avenue via Meadows Road. This will be supported by junction improvements and new crossing facilities with tactile paving.
On Market Street, a second one-way system will be introduced between the Home Bargains service yard entrance and Heathcote Street. Additional improvements will include a raised crossing, new parking and loading arrangements, upgraded signs and streetlights. Both phases will include repairs and upgrades to drainage and kerbs.
Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“These highways improvements are an important part of our commitment to supporting the regeneration of Kidsgrove and making it easier and safer for people to travel around the town.
“It’s an important project for the town and part of a wider programme of improvements funded by the Government’s Town Deal. It will deliver long-term benefits for the community and help support the town’s future growth and success.
“Crews will be doing their best to get the work done as efficiently as possible and we’re grateful for people’s patience.”
Jonathan Gullis, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and Cabinet member for Planning and Town Centres, said:
“This is another step forward as the Town Deal delivers real, visible improvements for our town.
“We have already seen major progress, from the reopening of Kidsgrove Sports Centre and the new pump track at Newchapel Rec, to unlocking Chatterley Valley West for new employment opportunities, alongside improvements to the canal and links into the town centre.
“These improvements will help traffic flow in the town centre and help make Kidsgrove a better place to shop and visit.”
Temporary traffic lights, lane closures and signed diversions will be in place where required and access to properties and businesses will be maintained wherever possible. A two-week overnight closure on Station Road and Meadows Road is planned from Monday 24 August for resurfacing.
