The Government has today confirmed that its decision to create two new councils in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, one covering the north and one covering the south, has been withdrawn so that it can be formally reconsidered as part of its review.
Withdrawal of the decision does not mean reorganisation has been cancelled. The Government remains committed to local government reorganisation and will reconsider all the options put forward for the area. Minster Jim McMahon, Minister for Local Government and English Devolution, confirmed that he expects elections to any new councils are expected in May 2028, with new councils in place for April 2029.
A further update from the Government is expected in early 2027.
Councillor Hayley Coles, Acting Leader of the Council, said:
“Staffordshire did not ask for council reorganisation. We committed significant time and money, now, the Government has withdrawn its decision, leaving our staff and communities facing yet more uncertainty.
“It still has not explained what its review has covered, what evidence informed its decision or how it will address the imbalance in democratic representation and protect local taxpayers. Withdrawing a decision is not a substitute for explaining it. Our confidence in this process is wearing thin.
“The Government must provide clear answers and reimburse the full £1.1 million we have spent developing plans whose future remains uncertain. Staffordshire’s taxpayers should not be left to foot the bill for this Government-led process. We will keep supporting our staff and delivering the services residents rely on. The Government needs to bring the same commitment and clarity to its own responsibilities.”
There are no changes to council services. Residents should continue to access services and support in the same way as they do now.
