With excitement building ahead of England’s’ semi-final clash with Argentina later tonight, football fans throughout Staffordshire are expected to gather in pubs and bars to cheer on England as they bid to reach another World Cup final.
The match is set to reignite one of international football’s most famous rivalries. England and Argentina have not faced each other since a friendly in Geneva in 2005, and not in a World Cup since 2002 in the group stage.
Across Staffordshire, the tournament has brought communities together, with people gathering to watch matches and support local hospitality businesses.
Martin Murray, Leader at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“It’s been a great World Cup so far and England’s semi-final tonight against their old rival Argentina promises to be another real treat for football fans.
“The tournament has been fantastic for communities right across Staffordshire and has provided a real boost for many of our pubs, bars and hospitality venues. Major sporting events like this showcase the important role our hospitality sector plays in local economies, creating jobs and bringing people together.
“We wish the team the very best of luck for the game and hope they can take another step towards World Cup glory.”
