Discover smart ways to waste less at Staffordshire County Show

Waste team stand county show

Visitors to next week’s Staffordshire County Show can discover what happens to their recycling and waste while picking up practical ideas to repair and reuse more and throw away less.

Staffordshire County Council, alongside its partners, will host an interactive stand at the show on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May, featuring hands-on activities and demonstrations for all ages focused on reducing waste at home and within local communities.

Haywoods Repair Café will be joining the stand with live repair demonstrations, showing how everyday items can be fixed and used for longer rather than thrown away.

The council’s Waste Minimisation Roadshow will also be on hand, offering simple, practical tips to help residents recycle more and waste less.

Waste partner Veolia will offer a VR experience showing how 340,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle waste is turned into enough electricity to power 66,000 homes.

Staffordshire introduced food waste recycling across three districts and boroughs last month. And high levels of resident participation are already being reported, with significant amounts of food waste already being diverted from general rubbish and transformed into electricity and fertiliser.

Since the end of March, the service has begun rolling out across the county, with East Staffordshire, Stafford Borough and Cannock Chase among the first areas to see collections start.

Early results show strong take‑up, with 801 tonnes of food waste collected during April across the operational districts and boroughs.

Andrew Mynors, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for connectivity, said:

Reducing waste starts with everyday choices at home. Our stand at the County Show is packed with simple ideas, practical tips, and hands-on demonstrations to help people repair more, recycle smarter, and waste less. There will be plenty for families to enjoy throughout the day, with interactive activities for visitors of all ages.

The show presents us with an opportunity to demonstrate how as a county council we’re doing all we can to reduce waste and minimise costs, whilst ensuring we are involving our communities all the way.”

The Staffordshire County Council stand will be at A18 at the county showground, open from 8am to 6pm. People can find out more on the show website.
