Developer funded road scheme set to begin on busy Staffordshire route

A major road scheme to provide access to a job-boosting development near Lichfield gets under way this month.

The scheme on London Road is fully funded by site developer Indurent and forms the first phase of works connected to wider planned development at Cricket Lane by Indurent and house developer Persimmon.

The project near the Swinfen Interchange starts on Monday 23 March and will take approximately seven months, completing in autumn 2026. It is being delivered by the county council.

A new signalised junction will be constructed on London Road, as well as a package of improvements to support safer walking and cycling routes. These include footway widening, a new uncontrolled pedestrian crossing and upgrades to drainage and lighting.

To allow the works to be carried out safely, 24-hour two-way traffic lights will be in operation throughout the scheme, manually controlled during peak times to minimise disruption. This temporary traffic management will not be in place on London Road during the closures of the A38 for the planned HS2 works, from Saturday 28 March until Wednesday 8 April.

A week of overnight closures needed for resurfacing towards the end of the scheme and dates publicised closer to the time.

Access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout, and people are advised to allow extra time for journeys.

Daniel Cecil, Cabinet Support Member for Highways (Operation South) at Staffordshire County Council, said:

London Road is a busy route close to the Swinfen Interchange and we understand that any disruption is frustrating for those who use it regularly. We apologise for the inconvenience these works may cause, but they are essential to support new development in the area and to ensure the road network is safe, modern and fit for the future. This scheme is entirely developer funded, meaning no cost to Staffordshire taxpayers.”
