A household waste recycling centre in South Staffordshire is set to fully reopen this winter following completion of extensive refurbishment works.
The Wombourne centre currently provides a partial service enabling residents to recycle general bagged household waste and bulky household items, green waste, cardboard and wood. It’s limited to four vehicles only though one of its two gates.
The site has experienced subsidence problems and was closed temporarily in the spring of 2024. It opened that autumn and has operated at reduced capacity since.
Now extensive surveys and assessments have been completed, and structural repair work is under way. This includes utility connections and a new working surface, drainage and a new site office.
When the facility reopens, it will provide the full recycling services offered by the county council’s other sites. A date is being finalised and will be announced closer to the time, expected to be at the end of the year or early 2027.
Andrew Mynors, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Connectivity, said:
Our Wombourne site has only been providing a limited service for the last couple of years due to the subsidence issue and unfortunately some site vandalism.
The waste recycling team has made every effort to keep the site open, albeit only partially, in difficult circumstances. They have had to ensure these full structural repairs have been completed to make the site safe and ready for full reopening.
We look forward to being able to provide a full service as soon as possible and hope to announce the date in the coming weeks.”
