Children from across Staffordshire are being invited to complete the library service’s Summer Reading Challenge and claim their prizes before it ends on Monday 14 September.
So far, more than 10,000 children have signed up to the challenge and over 5,000 have already completed and collected their medals and certificates.
This year’s challenge, ‘Read to the Beat,’ is inspired by the power of music and storytelling. Run by Staffordshire County Council’s Libraries service, the free initiative encourages children to keep reading during the summer holidays while exploring books, audiobooks and eBooks from their local library. From adventures and mysteries to factual books, comics and audiobooks, there is something to suit every interest and reading level.
Hayley Coles, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said:
The Summer Reading Challenge is one of our most popular events of the year and one that we all look forward to.
It’s a fantastic way to keep children reading, learning and having fun throughout the school holidays and it’s great to see so many children taking part.
We also know that reading for pleasure has huge benefits for children’s confidence, wellbeing and educational development. Good reading skills can also benefit people throughout their life, through further learning and with career progression.
I’d encourage any children who haven’t yet completed the challenge to do so before the scheme ends.”
Staffordshire Libraries continue to offer a wide range of activities, events and resources for children and families throughout the year, alongside access to thousands of books, audiobooks and digital resources.
