Help and access guide

Our website has a number of features to make it more accessible. We want to make our site available to the widest possible section of the community. This page lists the main features and how you can use them.

Text only

You can switch our site into "text only" mode, which removes all graphics and changes the colour scheme to a high-contrast yellow on black. The text only link is at the top of every page. Once you've clicked it, all the pages you visit on the site will be text only until you click the "graphic version" link at the bottom of a text only page.

The text only version of the site can be useful if you find the standard text hard to read. It's also faster to load, so if you are using a very slow internet connection pages will appear faster in text only mode.

Access keys

Access keys give users the ability to browse a website by using the keyboard, instead of clicking links with a mouse. Our page about access keys explains how to use them to navigate the site.

If you have trouble using a mouse, or simply find it faster to move around the site using the keyboard, then this feature can make access easier.

Font size

You can change the size of the text on our pages. This can be done in your web browser.

  • In Internet Explorer for Windows, go to the View menu, then Text Size, then choose a size.
  • In Firefox for Windows, go to the View menu, Text Size then Increase.
  • In Safari for an Apple Macintosh computer, click View, then Make Text Bigger.

If you're using a different web browser you can check the help instructions for your browser to find out how to enlarge text.

Screen readers and text-to-speech

The presentation of our site and the text only mode help our pages to work with screen reading software. The "Skip Navigation" link lets you skip to the content on a page without having the menu items read aloud on every page.

The RNIB website has information about screen reading software, pricing and suppliers.

This site also works with Browsealoud text to speech software.
