Take notice
Paying attention to the simple things—your thoughts, feelings and surroundings—helps you stay present and look after your wellbeing. Time in green spaces is especially good for both mental and physical health. Small moments of noticing can help you understand how you feel, spot triggers, and handle challenges more easily. Mindful hobbies like journaling, colouring or knitting can also help you unwind.
What happens next
There are many ways to take notice in Staffordshire. Here are some suggestions to help you get started:
- Staffordshire Connects – Find local Parks and open spaces, and Places to go, things to do near you
- Walks and Country Trails – Explore local routes and green spaces you can enjoy at your own pace.
- Libraries – Quiet places to read, reflect and discover local history, events and exhibitions.
- Mindfulness resources – Learn more from Mindfulness – NHS and the Mental Health Foundation (guides, tips and practices you can try at home).
Not just nature: You can “take notice” indoors too—notice sounds, light, textures and your breathing. Choose what feels comfortable.
Start noticing
Whether you have a few spare minutes or more time, there’s always something you can do to pause and pay attention.
If you have five minutes:
- Write down three things you’re grateful for today.
- Look out of a window and notice five things you hadn’t spotted before.
- Take a quick photo of something lovely, quirky or interesting.
If you have about half an hour:
- Go on a short mindful walk. Focus on what you can see, hear and smell; start a simple nature journal.
- Visit a local park or small green space and sit quietly for a few minutes.
- Try a short guided mindfulness exercise or breathing practice.
If you have a little longer:
- Explore forest bathing (a calm, unhurried walk among trees).
- Visit a local park, garden or nature reserve; pause and observe what’s happening around you.
- Join a gentle wellbeing session at a community venue or library.
Accessibility tip: If busy places are challenging, try quieter times or a calm indoor spot. Short, repeated moments of noticing can be as helpful as longer sessions.
Costs
Most ideas are free or low‑cost. Local parks and short walks are usually free. Some venues or events may ask for a small fee or parking charge.
