Keep learning
Learning new things keeps our minds active and can make us feel happier and more fulfilled. It can also help us meet new people, build confidence, and give us a stronger sense of purpose. Learning doesn’t have to mean exams—small, everyday activities count too. Set a simple goal, give it a go, and build from there.
What happens next
There are many learning opportunities in Staffordshire. Here are some suggestions to help you get started:
- Community Learning – Free and low‑cost short courses for adults and families, including English, maths, digital skills and wellbeing.
- Open Door – Work placements for Staffordshire jobseekers to gain experience, develop skills and build confidence.
- Staffordshire Connects – Find local groups and activities. Search “Activities and clubs” or “Learning, work and volunteering.”
- Find a library – Join your local library for books, audiobooks and free online resources. Many libraries host talks, craft groups and digital skills sessions.
- Making Every Contact Count (MECC) – Free training via Everyone Health to build conversation skills that support people’s health and wellbeing (ask, listen, signpost).
Not about qualifications: You can keep learning through hobbies, conversations, volunteering, clubs, podcasts and community projects—choose what works for you.
Get learning
It’s not always easy to fit something new into your day, but even small steps can boost your wellbeing. Try ideas that match the time you have:
If you have five minutes:
- Do a quick word game, crossword or Sudoku.
- Learn one new word, phrase or fact and share it with someone.
- Watch a short “how‑to” video or read a quick article.
If you have about half an hour:
- Try a new recipe (the shop walk can help you be active too).
- Visit your local library to borrow a book or explore free e‑resources.
- Explore Staffordshire’s history via the Local Heritage Hub or the Staffordshire History Centre, then plan a local visit.
If you have a little longer:
- Browse OpenLearn (The Open University) for free online courses in many subjects.
- Join a local class or interest group (search Staffordshire Connects).
- Listen to a podcast or TED Talk on a topic you’re curious about—great while walking or travelling.
Accessibility tip: Choose formats that suit you—short videos, audiobooks, captions, transcripts or quiet sessions at libraries and community venues.
Costs
Many learning options are free or low‑cost. Libraries, OpenLearn courses and community taster sessions are often free. Some courses may charge a fee, but concessions or funded places may be available.
