Historic Environment Record requests for research or local interest

The HER can be accessed online via the Heritage Gateway website and some information is also available through our online mapping system.

Requests for more detailed information or specialist research can be emailed to us:

Email: her@staffordshire.gov.uk

We welcome visitors who want to carry out research at our offices. To make sure we can provide all the information you need, please book an appointment with the Historic Environment Record Officer at least 48 hours in advance.

Commercial Historic Environment Record requests

Requests for commercial HER searches and property checks should now be submitted and paid for online:

Developer online advice / data request form

We provide two levels of commercial HER requests:

Basic Property Check (£30.00)

Our property check service reviews a site or property against the Historic Environment Record (HER). It identifies any designations or undesignated heritage assets, such as whether the property is Scheduled, Listed, in a Conservation Area, or has other archaeological or historical links.

We provide a summary of relevant information, or confirm if no historic environment interests are found.

This service does not include advice on planning implications. For planning advice or other curatorial services, please visit our Historic Environment Advice and Guidance pages.

Full HER Data Request (£100)

Full HER data requests include information such as:

  • Monuments
  • Events
  • Listed Buildings
  • Scheduled Monuments
  • Registered Parks and Gardens
  • Registered Battlefields
  • Conservation Areas
  • Historic Landscape Characterisation
  • Extensive Urban Surveys
  • Historic Environment Assessments
  • National Mapping Programme data (where available).

The data is provided as detailed PDF reports, plus GIS data or PDF maps if needed. It covers the site or property and a surrounding search area (usually 1 km). When making a request, please tell us your preferred search radius and the format you would like the data in.

For planning or development purposes, such as preparing a Heritage Statement or a Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessment, you must not use the Heritage Gateway website instead of a HER search. This is required by the NPPF. Heritage Gateway is not a full or up-to-date record of the information held by the HER.

We do not provide HER data or planning advice for the Stoke-on-Trent Unitary Authority area. Please contact Stoke on Trent City Council HER directly for such requests.
