Staffordshire has many historic landscapes, buildings, settlements, archaeological sites, and monuments. These give the county its unique character. The historic environment helps communities feel a sense of identity and belonging. It is also a valuable resource for learning and enjoyment. It can even support regeneration in Staffordshire.

Our Historic Environment Team gives advice on managing and protecting Staffordshire’s archaeology, historic buildings, and landscapes. The team also manages and develops the Historic Environment Record.

SCC County Archaeology Standard

We have created the County Archaeology Standard (PDF, 2.86 MB) to guide applicants, consultants, and contractors on working with us and the archaeological process. It sets the minimum standards for typical archaeological projects in Staffordshire. The document includes details about our fees and charges, as well as Model Briefs for common non-intrusive and intrusive activities. These briefs outline the minimum requirements for such projects in the county.

Research

We also carry out and commission research projects to improve understanding of Staffordshire’s historic environment. This research helps update the Historic Environment Record and supports the planning process. It also informs the advice we give.

Our research and guidance include the Extensive Urban Survey project. It provides historic environment assessments for 7 of Staffordshire’s 8 districts. We also produce documents like Historic Structures and Areas: Practical Conservation and Design (PDF, 6.81 MB).
