What does this mean for Staffordshire?

The government has confirmed its decision on local government reorganisation in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. 

In future, new unitary councils will deliver local services across the area.

What will change?

There will be new unitary councils responsible for delivering all local government services, including:

  • Waste collection
  • Children's services
  • Planning
  • Adult social care
  • Highways
  • Environmental services

These councils will replace the current county, city, district and borough councils.

North Staffordshire

  • Newcastle-under-Lyme
  • Stoke-on-Trent
  • Staffordshire Moorlands

Population: 494,803

South Staffordshire

  • Stafford
  • East Staffordshire
  • Cannock Chase
  • Lichfield
  • Tamworth
  • South Staffordshire

Population: 682,775

When will this happen?

Under the government's timetable:

  • Elections to shadow councils are expected in May 2027
  • New councils are expected to be established in April 2028

What this means for you

There are no immediate changes to council services.

You should continue to use services in the same way and contact the same council teams for support.
