Devolution and Local Government Reorganisation

The Government is reviewing plans for how councils could change in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

It had previously decided to create two new councils, one for the north and one for the south. However, that decision has now been withdrawn while the government look again at all the options put forward (view the proposals).

This does not mean the changes have been cancelled. The Government still plans to reorganise councils in our area, but it will consider the options again before making a decision.

When will this happen?

A further update is expected from Government in early 2027.

The Government has confirmed they expect elections to any new councils to happen in May 2028, with new councils up and running in April 2029.

What this means for you

There will be no change to your council services. 

You should continue to use services in the same way as you do now and contact the same council teams for help and support.
