High Sheriff
History and duties of the High Sheriff
A High Sheriff is an independent non-political Royal appointment for a single year.
This role started in Saxon times, when the “Shire Reeve” had to keep the peace in the county and collect taxes for the King.
Today, there are 55 High Sheriffs in England and Wales. Their main job is still to support the King or Queen and the courts. They also help the police, emergency services, and charities. They work on projects to stop crime, especially helping young people stay out of trouble.
They support local charities and groups that do good work. The High Sheriff Association has started projects like DebtCred and Crimebeat to help with important problems.
If you meet them, you just call them High Sheriff.
