How to register a birth
Royal Stoke University Hospital (Stoke-on-Trent) and Good Hope Hospital (Sutton Coldfield) are not in Staffordshire. You must register births from these hospitals with their local registration services.
When a baby is born, you must register the birth within 42 days.
Where to register
- If your baby was born in Staffordshire, you can register the birth at any registration office in the county.
- The registrar will ask for details and enter them into the official register. You’ll then sign the record.
Birth certificates
- Each certificate costs £12.50
- You can pay by credit or debit card
- You can buy as many certificates as you need
- Short birth certificates are no longer issued
If the birth was outside staffordshire
- You can give the details to a registrar in Staffordshire as a declaration
- The information will be sent to the correct district
- You must buy certificates from the district where the baby was born
- Do not buy certificates from Staffordshire if the birth happened elsewhere
Births in Stoke-on-Trent
- If your baby was born at Royal Stoke University Hospital, register with Stoke-on-Trent Registration Service
- You can make a declaration at a Staffordshire office, but certificates must be bought from Stoke-on-Trent
