How to register a birth

Royal Stoke University Hospital (Stoke-on-Trent) and Good Hope Hospital (Sutton Coldfield) are not in Staffordshire. You must register births from these hospitals with their local registration services.

Where to register

  • If your baby was born in Staffordshire, you can register the birth at any registration office in the county.
  • The registrar will ask for details and enter them into the official register. You’ll then sign the record.

Birth certificates

  • Each certificate costs £12.50
  • You can pay by credit or debit card
  • You can buy as many certificates as you need
  • Short birth certificates are no longer issued

If the birth was outside staffordshire

  • You can give the details to a registrar in Staffordshire as a declaration
  • The information will be sent to the correct district
  • You must buy certificates from the district where the baby was born
  • Do not buy certificates from Staffordshire if the birth happened elsewhere
