Telecare

Telecare provides 24/7 access to help and support, enabling people to stay safe, independent, and connected at home through alarms, sensors, and emergency response services.

Last updated: 20th July

Telecare helps people stay safe and independent at home by providing a way to signal for help if needed.

It can be useful for anyone who may need support, including older people, disabled people and people who feel vulnerable.

What is telecare?

Telecare systems are sometimes called Carecall or Lifeline.

They usually include a base unit connected to your phone line or the internet and a call button worn as a pendant, wrist strap or brooch.

If you need help, pressing the button connects you to a response centre. Staff will assess the situation and arrange the support you need.

Types of telecare

  • Telephony service
When you press the button, the provider contacts a relative, carer or the emergency services, depending on the situation.
  • Responder service
Some providers have trained responders who can visit your home and provide support in person if needed.

Additional equipment

You can add other devices to your telecare system for extra support, including:

  • falls detectors
  • smoke alarms
  • sensor pads
  • sensor lights
  • door sensors

You can find examples of telecare equipment on the Living Made Easy website.

New products are released regularly, so it is worth comparing different options to find equipment that best meets your needs.

Preparing for the Digital Switchover

Do you or someone you know already use a telecare device?

Landline services are changing as part of the Digital Phone Switchover. Some older telecare alarms may stop working if they are not updated.

If you have a telecare device, contact your telephone provider to discuss the changes and make sure your equipment will continue to work after the switchover.
