A5192 Eastern Avenue/Watery Lane junction upgrade

Major junction works in Lichfield due for completion before Christmas.

A major upgrade to a main road junction in Lichfield to provide access to a new housing development will be completed in December.

The developer-funded scheme will see the A5192 Eastern Avenue junction with Watery Lane upgraded to include additional lanes, new traffic lights, road resurfacing, new and improved paths, signs and road markings and improved drainage. There will also be a new controlled pedestrian crossing on Eastern Avenue which will significantly improve safety.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways Peter Mason said:

“This is a major upgrade to the junction on the busy Eastern Avenue which will provide safe access to the new housing development.

While this developer-funded scheme was due to finish in November there have unfortunately been some unforeseen utility issues, so we apologise for the delay. The December works will take place overnight to minimise disruption and will be completed well ahead of Christmas.

We will remind people of the closures closer to the time and publish the diversion route. We’d again like to thank people for their patience while work has been carried out.”

When are the works taking place?

Night-time Road Closure – Eastern Avenue/Watery Lane

Monday 1st – Friday 15th December 2025

What works are taking place?

To enable the works on Eastern Avenue/Watery Lane to be completed safely, there will be some night-time closures taking place on the dates detailed above. The closures are planned from 7pm each evening until 7am the following morning Monday to Friday with both Eastern Avenue and Watery Lane open to traffic during the daytime.

Works during the night-time closure will include removing some of the existing road surface, building up of the road to the new levels, laying surfacing material, replacing road markings and completing new traffic signals installation. The team will make every effort to carry out the noisier operations during the early hours of the shift, however, there will be some unavoidable noise throughout.

This will include reversing beacons on vehicles such as delivery wagons, rollers and the specialist surfacing vehicles. There will also be flashing beacons on plant and equipment. It is our aim to complete these works on time, but due to the time of year, we have to allow for inclement weather.

A signed diversion route will be in place during the closure. Closure points will be on Eastern Avenue at the junction of Norwich Close, just west of Eastern Avenue, Watery Lane North of Kilby Avenue and in Worcester Close.

Worcester Close

Work to remove the existing surface and resurface across and into Worcester Close will take place on Monday 1 December and Tuesday 2 evening with the new surfacing currently planned for Wednesday 3 December overnight. Before then, residents will be contacted to agree specific access restrictions due to there being one way in and out, and the diversion routes.

Will I be able to access my home/business?

People directly affected by the planned closures will be notified nearer the time. Access arrangements will be explained as part of these notifications.

What effect could the works have on me?

With any large scheme, unfortunately temporary traffic management and some resultant disruption is inevitable.

This has included temporary signals, lane closures and some road closures. Between 1 and 12 December, overnight closures will also be in place between 7pm and 7am, with a signed diversion route available.

We’ll keep people up to date with traffic management changes and any diversions.
