Give
Think about how you can help those around you – it can make a big difference to them and make you feel better too. People who help others often feel happier, so helping others is a great way to improve your own mental health and wellbeing.
Helping others, even in small ways, can give you a sense of pride, purpose, and self-worth. It’s a simple but powerful way to boost your own happiness and that of the people around you.
There are many ways to give to others. It doesn’t always have to involve giving money or things; giving your time, knowledge, and skills can make a real difference. You could regularly message a friend or family member, take some time to talk to someone who might be having a tough time, volunteer locally, join a community gardening group, or help out at your local food bank. Even the smallest act of kindness, like a smile or a thank you, can boost your wellbeing.
Getting started

Start giving
Finding a spare moment in a busy day can be a challenge but giving doesn’t always have to be big to be meaningful. Even small, thoughtful gestures can make a real difference, and they don’t have to take much time.
Take a look below for a few suggestions tailored to how much time you’ve got available.
If you have five minutes
- Ask a friend or colleague how they are and give them your full attention when they talk
- Offer a compliment or a kind word to someone who seems like they need a bit of a lift. It could really make a difference to someone’s day
- Support a local business by leaving them a positive review or rating online
If you have about half an hour
- Check in on an elderly neighbour or relative. Maybe even see if there is a useful errand that you could run for them
- If you enjoy crafting, why not make a small gift for someone to show you are thinking of them. A lovely boost for you both!
If you have a little longer
- Look into different volunteering opportunities in your local area. Volunteering can also be a great way to Connect with others too
- Keep an eye on local Facebook pages; there will often be details of local community action events such as clean up projects or litter picking
- Have a bit of a clear out of things you no longer need and donate a few items to a local charity shop
