Aims of course
The course is aimed at Staffordshire, Staffordshire Moorlands residents aged 19+ (excludes Stoke-on-Trent ). The course is for individuals who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of small businesses. This course is designed to be a progression course or for those individuals who wish to develop STEM skills further in the small business sector.
Entry requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required but a wish to want to learn more about running your own small business is desirable.
Course content
Learn how set yourself achievable goals and develop ideas with a simple business plan. This course will cover how you might want to start, develop and grow a small business, design a product, make it and sell it! Learners will experience several different businesses centred around food, plants, animals and rural leisure. This course is for anyone who is interested or simply curious to find out a little more about working for yourself.
How you will learn?
Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of user-friendly learning styles and activities.
Learner support
Learning support is provided throughout the course to meet the individual needs of learners. This may include assistance from a scribe, the use of a reading pen, an I-pad or computer, or one-to-one guidance to help build confidence and direct learners towards appropriate support.
Course assessments
Learners will be assessed at the start of the course to find their starting point and working level, throughout the course learners will be assessed formatively with tutor/learner reviews. At the end of the course learners can reflect on their progress and how they have achieved, tutors will assess learners summatively. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment and progress.
Learning materials
This is a hands-on practical course and participants should dress in appropriate clothing for both indoors and outdoors. There will be a study visit to local successful businesses.
What can learners progress onto next?
Learners can progress to further courses with UMRA - upskilling in English and maths or another subject(s) to support their progression. Some courses help support confidence building and independence.
