Countryside Ways to Wellbeing
Promote positive health and wellbeing. This course is based around animals, cooking, nature, gardening, woodworking and creative rural crafts with lots of practical learning activities.
Aims of Course
This course is for Staffordshire residents aged 19 years and over (excluding Stoke-on-Trent postcodes). It is designed for people who are experiencing or recovering from mental health challenges, or individuals who have neurodiverse needs, or are unemployed and looking to boost their wellbeing and independence.
Entry Requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in the countryside, animals and nature would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.
Course Content
Learn new skills in animal care, gardening, cookery, conservation, seasonal crafts, and orchard fruit picking. Experience Nature’s Calendar and take part in nature walks, container gardening, and creating your own flower planter. Learn how to take plant cuttings and care for houseplants. Creative activities will include natural flower arranging, wreath making, woodworking, and willow craft. You will build your own individual learning journal week by week, and we will support you every step of the way!

You will learn through a mix of hands-on activities, demonstrations, group discussions, and guided practical tasks. All learning materials will be provided, and you will be encouraged to build your own learning journal throughout the course to reflect on your progress and experiences. Our friendly tutors provide regular feedback, encourage your progress, and help you feel confident throughout the course. Course Assessments
You will be assessed through practical tasks and projects, reflecting your learning and progress. Regular feedbacks with your tutor will help you review your skills and understanding. At the end of the course, you will reflect on your achievements and complete a final assessment, showing how you have applied aspect of gardening and conservation techniques. The focus is on your personal growth and confidence building of what you have learned which will support your overall health and wellbeing.
Learning Materials
Please wear suitable clothing for the activities you will be taking part in, and bring a packed lunch. All materials required for the course will be provided.
What can learners progress onto next?
You can progress to courses such as Wonderful Woodwork and Tree Science, Learning with Nature in the Community, or choose to upskill in English and Maths with the Maths Made Easy course, or further support your wellbeing with the DIY and Crafting course.
