Gardening with Numbers

Develop your maths skills through practical gardening. Learn to use measuring, budgeting, and problem-solving through gardening tasks, making maths engaging, hands-on, and relevant to everyday life.

Aims of course

The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in Staffordshire, Staffordshire Moorlands (excludes  Stoke-on-Trent). The course is for individuals who want to further develop their numeracy skills in a practical, user-friendly way.

Entry requirements 

No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in improving your maths skills would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.

Course content

Take the worry out of maths with this gardening themed course made to relieve the stress often linked with maths. Learn concepts such as how to calculate perimeter, area and volume whilst caring for your own garden. Explore ratio and enhance your understanding of multiplication and division through gardening tasks. Whilst you grow beautiful plants, develop your maths skills in practical everyday life situations. Join us on this journey where the joys of gardening meets the power of maths!

How you will learn?

Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of user-friendly learning styles and activities.

Learner Support 

Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners' needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an IPad or a person to build individual confidence and point learners in the right direction.

Course assessments

Learners will be assessed at the start of the course to find their starting point and working level, throughout the course learners will be assessed formatively with tutor/learner reviews. At the end of the course learners can reflect on their progress and how they have achieved, tutors will assess learners summatively. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment and progress.

Learning materials

For this hands-on practical course learners should dress appropriately in clothes they do not mind getting dirty. Some of the course sessions will be conducted outside so learners need to be mindful of the weather conditions, sturdy footwear should be worn and gardening gloves will be provided.

What can learners progress onto next?

Learners can progress onto further gardening courses with different learning aims or courses that aim to improve English language skills.
