ESOL Level 1 Reading

Improve your English reading with this Level 1 qualification for Speakers of Other Languages [ESOL] This is a nationally recognised qualification. 

Who is the course aimed at?

For Staffordshire ESOL residents aged 19+.Develop your English reading skills at Level 1 - extended texts and applying reading strategies.

Entry requirements

An ESOL tutor will talk to you before the course starts to see if this is the right level for you.

Course Content

Extend your vocabulary, grammar and reading skills at Level 1. Read and understand a wide range of everyday and work related texts. Find the main ideas and specific information in longer texts. Identify purpose and tone and how to distinguish fact from fiction. You will also further develop your spoken and written skills.

Learning Methods

You will work in small groups with a friendly and supportive tutor. Some activities will help your digital skills - on a phone or the library computer. You will be asked to complete some work at home to help your progress.

Course Assessment

There is an exam at the end of the course. If you pass you will achieve the Ascentis Level 1 - Reading Award in ESOL Skills for Life.

Learning materials

On enrolment you will need to provide proof of ID (passport, national ID card, driver's licence) and proof of eligibility. For the course you will need a pen, a note pad and a documents folder. For homework you will need an internet connected device, either a PC, a laptop, an iPad, tablet or smart phone - you could do this at your local library.

What can learners do next/progress onto?

You tutor will give you advice. You could go on to do Level 1 Writing/Speaking and Listening or Level 2 Reading at another college. Other community learning courses or college courses.
