Cooking with Numbers

Cooking with numbers will help you improve your maths skills through practical cooking activities. Designed using recipes, measurements and budgeting to make maths fun, relevant, and confidence-boosting in everyday life.

Aims of course

For Staffordshire, Staffordshire Moorlands residents aged 19+ (excludes Stoke-on-Trent). Ideal for those looking to build confidence, improve everyday maths, or develop skills to support learning, daily life, or future employment.

Entry requirements 

No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in improving your maths skills would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.

Course content

Learn new key maths concepts through cooking and everyday maths challenges. This practical course offers opportunities to create healthy tasty dishes and it will enable you to budget as you go along. 

How you will learn?

Face to face learning in a classroom and kitchen, exploring different recipes and makes, together with an opportunity for shopping on a budget. The course offers a variety of user-friendly learning styles, taking away any maths worries or concerns. 

Learner Support 

Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners' needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an IPad or a person to build individual confidence and point learners in the right direction.

Course assessments

Learners will be assessed at the start of the course to find their starting point and working level, throughout the course learners will be assessed formatively with tutor/learner reviews. At the end of the course learners can reflect on their progress and how they have achieved, tutors will assess learners summatively. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment and progress.

Learning materials

All ingredients will be supplied for this cookery course. Please come in clothing where you can roll up sleeves pass the elbow. We request that long hair is tied back and beards are covered with a mask or beard net.  If you need glasses for reading or any learning aids please bring these along too. Please bring a packed lunch for the first day.

What can learners progress onto next?

Learners can progress onto further learning courses such as creative writing and journalling to improve English language skills or a preparing for volunteering course.
