Working with outside agencies
Referral Pathways
- Start with the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle in your setting.
- If concerns persist, discuss next steps with parents and carers.
- Identify the most appropriate service based on the child’s needs (e.g., speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, specialist SEND support).
- Follow local referral procedures and provide detailed information about the child’s development and interventions already tried.
- Keep parents informed throughout the process and obtain consent before making referrals.
Guidance for Using Outside Agencies
- Work collaboratively – share observations, assessments, and plans with professionals.
- Attend meetings and contribute to multi-agency discussions.
- Implement strategies recommended by specialists and monitor progress.
- Maintain clear records of advice and actions taken.
- Review support regularly and adapt as needed.
Key Principles
- Involve parents and carers at every stage.
- Use evidence-based information when making referrals.
- Build strong relationships with external professionals.
