Independent travel training
We help young people with special educational needs learn to travel independently to school, college or work placements. Training builds confidence and teaches safe travel skills. This may include using buses, trains or walking. We can also help with applying for travel passes.
Who can use this service?
You can use this service if you:
- Are aged 14 to 25
- Live in Staffordshire (not Stoke-on-Trent)
- Have a statement of special educational needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Is there a cost?
No. The service is free and provided by Staffordshire County Council.
There may be small costs during training, such as travel fares or drinks. You may be eligible for a free concessionary bus pass.

After referral
We’ll ask for more details about the person being referred, explain how the service works, and arrange a home visit to carry out an assessment.
Who will you meet?
You’ll meet one of our travel trainers — either Tonya Castree or Rob Powell.
What happens during training?
We’ll assess whether the person is suitable for training and agree on a safe route and method of travel. We’ll work with families and schools to arrange suitable times to start training.
