Steve Booth gives a fascinating talk on "Chimney sweeps, climbing boys, and the part played by Francis Wedgwood in eliminating them".
The presentation looks at how many children (from age 6 upwards) were forced to climb up sooty chimneys to clean them with brushes and scrapers – with some terrible results!
We then look at how reformers like Lord Shaftesbury tried to change things – especially concentrating on the Wedgwood family in our local area.
