Reading groups frequently asked questions
When should we pay our subscription?
You can pay your subscription at your local library. Your payment date will become your renewal date for the following year.
What if our group is small?
Smaller groups may receive fewer books, but the subscription still offers:
- Better access to titles
- Coordinated delivery
- No overdue or request charges
If your group decides not to subscribe, members can still borrow books individually using their own library cards. However:
- Books may arrive at different times
- Extended loans are only available for books not in high demand
- Request and overdue charges will apply
Can we still have a group membership without subscribing?
No. Group memberships are now linked to the subscription service. If your group does not subscribe, members must use their personal library accounts to borrow books.
Our group works differently – what should we do?
We understand that every group is unique.
If your group:
- Reads different books at different times
- Meets irregularly
- Has other special arrangements
Please email reading.groups@staffordshire.gov.uk and we’ll do our best to support your needs.
Do you offer audiobook sets?
We do not hold sets of audiobooks
Audiobooks may be available in various formats:
- CD sets
- MP3CD
- Playaway
Groups should let us know if there are formats they do not wish to use.
Members can also use our e-audio services (BorrowBox, Libby, uLibrary) to access titles individually these services are free, but may have loan restrictions.
Why is there a subscription charge for audiobooks?
The charge covers the staff time and resources needed to prepare audiobook sets for groups.
What are the benefits of subscribing?
- Access to curated sets
- 3-month loan period
- No overdue or request charges
- Simplified group borrowing
What if we don’t subscribe?
Groups can still request titles using the Library Catalogue, but:
- Each member must use their own library account
- Standard charges apply unless the member is exempt
- Overdue charges will apply
